Poets of Sound and Time

I have created two audiovisual poems. The first involves interaction by opening fortune cookies, and the second explores the ever-growing AI bubble that dominates the billboards of SF.

Working on and finishing these poems felt different from any other project I've worked on and finished. I definitely like the ideas and concepts behind the poems, and my execution for the most part, but something still leaves me unfulfilled. I don't know what it is. Was it too easy? Too incoherent? Lazy? Are these even poems that involve sound and time? Who knows.

Something that I've been thinking about recently is intention. We've been talking in class about how intention is so important and may be a distinguishing factor between what we consider "art" or not. It seemed to be that human artists or creatives have some kind of intention when creating a work. For me, though, I feel that most of my work is not born from intention, but just that I think it's cool, and that the intention is placed afterwards when I present my work and the audience puts their intentions onto it. Then I say: "yeah, that's what I meant!" but in reality I just did it because it was cool…

I think this assignment forced me to work on something that I otherwise wouldn't be gravitated towards — poetry and AI. It also forced me to create and finish something small within a week — something that I need to get into the habit of doing, especially as I create more video games. It's really a test of courage to be able to set my expectations aside and just make something, even if it's not good or unfulfilling…
